Interleaving: Why Mixing It Up Makes Dancers Learn Faster

Here is a scenario that will feel familiar. You spend twenty minutes drilling the opening section of a combination until it looks clean. Then you move on, teach the next section, drill that one too. By the end of class both sections look solid in isolation. You feel good about the rehearsal. Then next week you run it from the top and the first section has evaporated. The students look at you like they have never seen it before.
This is not a retention problem unique to your students. It is a predictable outcome of how most of us structure practice, and there is a well-researched explanation for why it happens and what to do instead.

The working memory post explained why cognitive capacity is limited and why we need to package information carefully. The chunking post gave you a strategy for making that packaging work. This post is about what happens after the chunks are built: specifically, how you practice them once they exist. And the answer turns out to be counterintuitive in the best possible way.
Blocked Practice Feels Productive. That Is Part of the Problem.
The standard approach to rehearsal is what researchers call blocked practice: you work on one skill or section repeatedly before moving to the next. Drill section A until it is clean, then drill section B, then drill section C. It makes intuitive sense. Repetition builds fluency. Staying on one thing feels focused and efficient.
The problem is that blocked practice creates what cognitive scientists call a fluency illusion. When you repeat the same movement over and over in a single session, performance improves quickly because the material is still active in working memory. It feels like learning because it looks like learning. But that short-term performance gain does not reliably predict long-term retention. The next time students encounter that material, working memory has moved on, and without a durable retrieval pathway into long-term memory, the material is harder to access than it appeared.
Robert Bjork at UCLA has written extensively about this distinction between performance and learning. Performance is what you see in the room during practice. Learning is what actually transfers to the next rehearsal, the next week, the recital. The two are not always the same thing, and the conditions that optimize performance in the moment often undermine learning over time (Bjork, 1994).
What Interleaving Is and Why It Works
Interleaving means practicing multiple skills or sections in alternating, mixed order rather than completing one before moving to the next. Instead of drilling A, then B, then C, you practice A, then B, then A again, then C, then B, then A. The sequence is varied rather than blocked.
This feels harder. Students will tell you it feels harder. You may feel like less is getting done. That sensation of difficulty is actually the mechanism. When students have to retrieve a chunk of material that they have not just been doing, they are engaging in active reconstruction rather than passive repetition. That reconstruction process is what builds durable retrieval pathways into long-term memory.
The research on this is consistent and substantial. A foundational study by Shea and Morgan (1979) showed that participants who practiced motor skills in an interleaved order performed worse during the practice session but significantly better on retention and transfer tests compared to those who used blocked practice. More recent work by Kornell and Bjork (2008) confirmed the same pattern in academic learning contexts. The short-term cost is real. So is the long-term benefit.
For dance teachers, this means that the rehearsal that feels a little messy, where students are reaching back for something they did ten minutes ago, may actually be doing more learning work than the clean, focused drill session that preceded it.
What This Looks Like in the Studio
You do not have to restructure everything to apply this principle. Here are a few ways it can show up in regular rehearsal practice.
Rotate sections rather than completing them. Once a section is learned well enough to be practiced, start mixing it in with other sections rather than staying on it until it is perfect. Run section one, then section three, then come back to section one. The gap between repetitions is part of what makes the repetition meaningful.
Mix across class. If you are teaching multiple styles or multiple pieces, resist the urge to keep them completely separate in every class. Returning to material from a previous week in the middle of working on something new activates retrieval and reinforces long-term storage.
Use the warm-up as a retrieval opportunity. Rather than always warming up with new material, periodically pull phrases from earlier in the season and ask students to reconstruct them without demonstration. This is interleaving across time, and it is one of the most efficient uses of the first ten minutes of class.
Let it feel hard without rescuing it immediately. When students struggle to retrieve something in an interleaved sequence, the instinct is to re-teach it. Sometimes the right move is to give them a moment to work for it first. The effortful retrieval is the learning. Rescuing too quickly short-circuits the process.
A Note on Managing the Room
One of the practical challenges of interleaving is that students may perceive it as disorganized, or may become frustrated when they cannot immediately access material they felt confident about during blocked practice. This is worth naming with them directly.
Telling students that practice is intentionally mixed because research shows it builds stronger memory is both accurate and motivating. It reframes the difficulty as evidence of learning rather than evidence of failure. It also builds metacognitive awareness, which is the ability to understand how one learns, and that awareness has its own positive effect on retention.
Students who understand why something is hard are more likely to persist through it than students who just feel confused. And in the long run, the dancer who can retrieve section one reliably after a week away from it is more prepared for performance than the dancer who could only do it clean when they had just drilled it for twenty minutes straight.
Structure and Surprise: Both Matter
It is worth pausing here to name something that experienced teachers know intuitively: students feel successful when they can anticipate the shape of class. A predictable structure, a consistent warm-up sequence, a familiar way of moving through material, reduces cognitive anxiety and gives students a sense of competence and safety. That feeling of success is not trivial. It is motivating, and motivation has a direct effect on learning. Predictability is not the enemy of interleaving.
The most effective studio environments hold both. The overall architecture of class stays consistent enough that students feel oriented and confident. Within that structure, the specific content shifts, surprises, and challenges them. Running a familiar warm-up but pulling phrases from three weeks ago instead of last week. Keeping the same rehearsal flow but changing the order sections are reviewed. Maintaining the rhythm of class while varying what appears inside it.
This is also what keeps classes from feeling stale over time. Prediction itself is not the problem. When a student can anticipate a sequence because they have genuinely learned it, that is the system working exactly as intended. The issue arises when the overall shape of class goes unchanged for so long that students can predict everything, not because they have mastered the material but because nothing new has been introduced in weeks. That kind of over-familiarity across a long stretch of time is what flattens engagement. Novelty and mild unpredictability signal to the cognitive system that attention is required. A little productive surprise within a familiar container is not just good learning science. It is good teaching craft, and most great teachers have been doing it by instinct for years.
The Connection to Everything Else
Interleaving works because of the same cognitive architecture that makes chunking and retrieval cues effective. When you retrieve a chunk after a delay or a switch in focus, you are pulling it out of long-term memory and strengthening the pathway that makes it accessible again later. This is the same mechanism behind spaced repetition and retrieval practice, two of the most evidence-supported strategies in learning science.
Blocked practice keeps material in working memory and creates the illusion of learning. Interleaved practice forces retrieval from long-term memory and creates actual learning. The difference shows up not in Tuesday's rehearsal but in Saturday's performance.
The goal was never a clean run-through in the room. The goal was a clean run-through on stage, weeks from now, under pressure. Building toward that requires practice conditions that match that challenge, not conditions that simply feel comfortable in the moment.
